Things To Keep in Mind Before a Hair Transplant

While it is understandable to be excited about receiving a hair transplant, it is also important to follow pre-operative instructions in order to achieve the best result possible.

Pay close attention to the instructions the doctor gave you in order to prepare for your hair transplant. They are crucial to the success of the transplant.

While each clinic differs greatly in their procedures and requirements, there are some general guidelines as to what to keep in mind.

If you are a smoker, it is recommended to avoid smoking prior to surgery. Smoking will slow down healing and increase the chances of wound infection and scarring.

Your doctor might ask you to take special medication in the days prior to your surgery, and it is important to let him know if you are allergic to any medicines. If you take vitamins B, E, or herbal products it is advised to stop one week before your surgery. Such vitamins could enhance bleeding. Also, do not take Aspirin or any other anti-inflammatory medications 7 days prior to your procedure. Many medications should be avoided. Let the doctor know if you have any medical conditions or if you are taking any medicines. If you are unsure about anything, ask your doctor.

If undergoing a STRIP it is recommended by some to massage the scalp 1 week before surgery in order to increase the skin’s elasticity. Also, don’t shave or cut your hair as you can use some of it to cover the area of extraction after your procedure. During the STRIP you will be receiving medication that might make you drowsy, therefore you should not drive afterwards.

Wear comfortable clothing the day of your hair transplant procedure. And it is better to wear a button shirt, rather than clothes which require pulling them over your head, in order to minimize irritation of the scalp.

The morning of your procedure, remove any hair pieces and wash your hair using regular shampoo. Do not apply anything to your hair and don’t put the hairpiece back on.

Do not drink any alcoholic or carbonated beverages in the days before your hair transplant procedure. They might increase your sensitivity to medications used during the procedure. It is a good idea to eat something before the surgery, to avoid nausea or dizziness, but only if you will be receiving local anesthesia. Many doctors do not recommend eating before being put under a sedative.

No matter what specific recommendations your hair clinic has, it is always wise to limit activities and allow yourself to rest in the days after your procedure.

While there are a few things to remember in order to achieve the best result possible, the most important thing is to relax and look forward to your new hair.
